LESSONS FROM THE 2012 ELECTION

Battles are constant in life. The 2012 election was a battle fought to win the soul of Ghanaian governance by political parties. This was a battle not fought with guns and bombs but with ideas, policies, manifestoes, personalities and track records. It was a battle fought through the ballot box. What I like to do in this article is to glean the lessons each person can apply to their individual battles whether relationship, family, financial, professional, personal or business from the election. Let’s explore together.
BATTLES ARE DIFFICULT: The first lesson is that battles are wired to be difficult. Winning an election is not attained on the day of election. Victory is won as a result of accumulation of days, weeks, months and years of intense campaigning. Listening to some of the political leaders, they left their families and went on without good sleep for days and nights. If you think personal battles like finances or managing a company is easy, then you have a wrong mind set. One thing I can assure you is that the difficult the battles, the greater the booties. Be equipped to fight difficult battles.
BATTLES ARE WON OR LOST: In this election, there were two strong contesting political parties (NPP & NDC). Each of them was convinced they were going to carry the day. But in a battle, some will win and some will lose. At least both of them won parliamentary seats and only one won the presidency. You cannot win all the way. In school, I wrote several examinations. It wasn’t all that I passed. I failed some and passed some. The more battles you win, the closer you draw towards winning the ultimate war of your dream.
BATTLES ARE ENDLESS: On the heels of the preceding lesson from the election is the point that there is going to be other opportunities to fight battles again. After four years, there is going to be another general election for political parties to contest. One battle, won or lost, does not cease battles in your life. Battles are unending. Living men always fight battles. Life must go on after a battle. One battle must teach you enough lessons to re-strategise and win at another opportunity.
The earlier you tune your mind to these three lessons and build tough skin, the better. Life is full of battles. Jesus knew the secret to winning battles that is why he never cowed before battles from the pressures of religious leaders or being unjustly judged. He taught a simple operational code in John 16:33 that, “In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” Win your battles for the war is guaranteed. Great assurance!
